Our Wildlife Species
We Protect Diverse Coastal Ecosystems
Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary represents one of the last remaining tracts of Southern Moist Mixed Deciduous forest along the Konkan coast. Spanning 52 sq. km, it serves as a critical ecological bridge between the marine environment of the Arabian Sea and the lush heights of the Western Ghats. This “coastal woodland” is not merely a forest; it is a vital corridor that supports over 200 bird species and several rare mammals that depend on its specific humidity and dense canopy.
210+ Bird Species: A heaven for forest and coastal birds. Flagship species include Malabar Pied Hornbill, the elusive Srilankan Frogmouth, Jewel of the Konkan & monsoon visitor Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher ( ODK), Beautiful Indian Paradise Flycatcher.
16–17 Species: Most famous for the Malabar Giant Squirrel, which thrives in the upper canopy. Other significant residents include the Indian Leopard, Hyena, Sambar, Barking Deer, and the tiny, shy Mouse Deer.
30–45+ Herp Species: Home to a rich variety of snakes including the Indian Rock Python, Russell’s Viper, Indian Rat Snake, and the rare Giri’s Bronzeback Tree Snake. Recent surveys have also recorded the Indian Flapshell Turtle and Common Sand Boa.
80–90+ Species: The forest floor and grasslands are alive with vibrant species like the massive Southern Birdwing (one of India’s largest), the Blue Mormon, and various species of Oakblues and Sailors.
710+ Plant Species: A unique mix of evergreen and deciduous growth. The hilltops are dominated by Anjan and Phansada, while the slopes feature Teak, Ain, Hirda, Jamba, and Mango trees.
